Word of the Day

Today's word is brought to us via an analysis of the differences in the democratic and republican caucuses. Why there seems to be more unity and uniformity in one caucus as opposed to the the other is of interest during these tumultuous debates over health care.

Variegated

–adjective
1. varied in appearance or color; marked with patches or spots of different colors.
2. varied; diversified; diverse.

And it is easier to build consensus around a “nothing” menu of 1 than it is for a more variegated menu of limitless options of “something.”

Word of the Day

Today's word is brought to you Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post and the guys/gals over at Ballon Juice who have who for different reasons (Ms. Marcus' lack of perspective and BJ for pointing it out to me!) started me down a path of inchoate rage.

So two things first, when it was pointed out to her that there were acutal substantitive differences in what Fox news does and say, MSNBC, she pretty much dismisses. Though it goes right to her premise, she can not admit that it possibly undermines her argument.

Secondly the comparisons between Nixon and Obama are just silly. Pity upon thee with short memories. As Glenn Greenwald basically concludes that the Obama administrations response is sane, in regards to Fox News and no where near the sort of vindictive operation the Bush administration operated under against the media at large. Now when I see Obama using the FBI, IRS or the FCC to punish/spy on journalist/networks then you will have a comparison to make. Otherwise they are just exercising those same First Amendment Rights that supposedly
Fox is being denied.

Oh well, I guess my attempt to not get riled up failed. So here is your damn word.

Anodyne

–noun
1. a medicine that relieves or allays pain.
2. anything that relieves distress or pain: The music was an anodyne to his grief.
–adjective
3. relieving pain.
4. soothing to the mind or feelings.

Hopefully Vodkatastrophe will be an anodyne to the stupid news coverage!

Word of the Day

Today we have another fun word. With all the ups and downs of the last couple of years, I thought people might appreciate a snooty way of talking about that!

Vicissitude

Even through the vicissitudes of modern life, Mike and I's friendship has endured.

Word of the Day

Once again we have another installment of the fabulous "Word of the day"!

This weeks word comes from the amazing world of philosophy. Also I find it incredibly fun to say!

Epistemological

One would think by its very nature epistemological studies would lead to a certain humility, instead, it seems to cater to the most pedantic qualities of most.

This word perfectly describes you!

2. a person who travels often or to many different places, esp. for pleasure.

Word of the Day!

It has been a while, I know.

But there is still a world of words out there that wait to be discovered and used! So lets get back to it shall we.

Desultory

–adjective
1. lacking in consistency, constancy, or visible order, disconnected; fitful: desultory conversation.
2. digressing from or unconnected with the main subject; random: a desultory remark.

Much of the talk about a national health care plan has been desultory in nature. Focusing on costs rather then actual structural deficiencies.

Word of the week....

Those involved know why this was necessary.

Nude

Naked

They are fraking synonyms.

And before the argument starts, if they are used in each other's definition that is by definition synonymous.

There are connotative differences, but not in reference to the lack of clothes. Nude ambition is not the same as naked ambition...etc.

For the ladies....and your word of the week

I might well blow a gasket, if I don't lay off the hard news so Tyler and Eric interceded and convinced me to do a lighter post.

This first bit is brought to you by Eric. He loves the ladies...so I thought I would share some of the items he has brought to my attention today.

First up, I now know why I should never dance again...and I apologize for all of mandom, for what you ladies have to deal with.

I think it is the push-ups that I love the most. This woman is both brave and providing a valuable service to her community.

Also a new site for you ladies to visit: Why Women Hate Men

Next up, also from Eric, is the sad tale of Meco and her harrowing tale of overcoming masturbation. The truth is, I feel sorry for this young lady, this is not a slight on religion....but I do feel bad for her. It is sad when someone is not comfortable with them self or their sexuality.
I started masturbating as early as 7th or 8th grade, but overall my imprisonment to lust started as early as 4 or 5 years of age. When I was a little girl, I had a friend that I played with. Something must have happened to her because it was from playing with her that I had my first sexual experience. After this one time experience I wasn't the same and I developed homosexual tendencies as well.
Personally I am big fan of masturbation. And of girls. So I think they would go well together. Err...

And finally a long overdue Word of the Week!

This Word of the Week is brought to you by the letter Tyler and the number 7.

Meretricious

Yo Roman, what do you think of that shirt the young lady is wearing?

Hmm...well I know the off the shoulder thing was bumpin' in the 80's, but nowadays it seems a bit meretricious.

Word of the week

It has been a while since we had one. But in honor of a Ed and Kelly's pending nuptials, I thought I would dip into the way back machine and pull out a word that Ed dropped on me some time ago. Also it is appropriate cause of an discussion Mike and I had. So it was the perfect storm.

Forgive me if I have already used it...it is just so fun to say!

Do I need to add, I doubt we will hear this one in the debate tomorrow.

Sesquipedalian

Mike: Dude you misspelled "Lyme" disease.

Roman: Dammit I thought so!

Mike: You used an "i" instead of a "y"! I thought you were some sort of sesquipedalian or something. I am gravely disappointed in you!

Roman: Just cause I use big words doesn't mean I know how to spell them!

Word of the week...

Yes it is that time again! More fabulous ways to increase your vocabulary and astound your friends with feats of linguistic legerdemain (people won't know what you are talking about!).

In light of the recent conflict in Georgia, I figured it was time to dust of an oldie but a goody.

Manichean

The Manichean demagoguery that arises during any international incident seems to be reaching a fever pitch during the presidential race.

Also it is a fun word, cause it references Zoroastrianism, which is just fun to say.

Word of the week and a mental health break......

This weeks word is a reader submission. Not sure if I should be insulted or not.....

Didactic

No offense Roman, but that post you did on the attorney general seemed a bit didactic.

Also I am on the verge of slipping into a apoplectic fit over the last week. Whether it is the release of the Obama Nation by Jerome Corsi (The New York Times does an interesting write-up on this "non-fiction" book), or Joe Lieberman trying desperately to dethrone Rush Limbaugh as wanker of the century and failing. The conflict in Georgia. The maneuvering by the campaigns and Senator McCain not know what the hell he is talking about or maybe situational irony is lost upon him. I am sure a massive post of some sort is coming.....

That combined with a bunch of friends going through some stressful times, Mike's computer is on the fritz, Ed, Kelly, Leigh, and Monika are planning weddings, X-tina is getting her doctorate groove on and Mariah is studying like a maniac for the LSAT's. We could use a little pick-me-up. So it is good if we all take a moment out of the day during our hectic lives to just relax, unwind and let go.

When I am having it rough...this song always comes to mind....

....and it makes me giggle....

Early word of the week....

Dammit...this week has me damn near apoplectic! So y'all get another new word to add to your lexicon!

Dudgeon

Much like seeing people who wear leggings as pants, the use of the term "race card", has worked Roman in to a state of high dudgeon.

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Word of the week

Today's word is was brought on by the recent hissy fit the McCain campaign has been throwing, over Senator Obama's recent overseas trip.

Churlish

I was just asking if I could snort this cocaine off your buttocks while watching "Willy Wonka", there is no need to be all churlish about it!

Word(s) of the week(s)

I have have had my fill of the way the media, pundits, on air personalities, and politicians repeat certain words/terms without any hesitation. The English language has hundreds of thousands of words in it surely we do not have to re-use terms such as, pivot, branding, move to the center, etc.

Between that and journalists strongly held belief that the term "lie" is verboten really burns my biscuits! Evidently, you must know the original speaker's intent before you can impute whether it is a lie. That irks the hell out of me. Why? Because sometimes reality makes it clearly evident that an actor has given demonstrably false statements. That is not always the case, but take the following as examples:

Senator McCain denying that he never said, "....he did not understand the economy."?

Senator Obama's claim that he has not changed his position on the recently passed FISA amendment? Well I will leave that question to the estimable Glenn Greenwald, he sums up the mendacity quite well, and better then I.

But I digress. We need to use some new words! There is so much rich and florid language to draw on, specially considering how many things we should be angered by. Considering my previous examples I think these terms are well timed and appropriate. So my offerings for this and last week are:

Calumny and Perfidy

Just to reiterate, they are acutely appropriate for the behavior that we have seen thus far in the presidential race as well as over the last 7 years. So use them in a sentence. Write a pretty letter. Pen a lengthy missive to the editor. Just do something to help our journalist and media friends out.
